There's no shortage of mobile VoIP apps, so whether you're a fan of Skype, Fring, or another service, you certainly have plenty of options. Vonage apparently thinks that there's still room for a little more competition in that sphere, and has announced its new Vonage Mobile app for Android and iOS devices.
Now, this isn't the first time Vonage has come up with a smartphone app; Vonage Extensions has been available for some time now, but it's positioned as a tool for subscribers who use Vonage as their home phone provider. Vonage Mobile, by contrast, has the distinction of not requiring any existing or ongoing relationship with the company; you can add credit to your pre-paid account whenever you please, though only in $5 or $10 increments.
Vonage Mobile works pretty much the same as other VoIP apps. Calls made to other Vonage Mobile users, which never leave the internet, are free, but dialing-out to a standard phone number will cost you. Vonage is trying to stand out from the pack by offering what it claims are some of the lowest rates on international calls around. According to Vonage at least, it beats Skype's prices by thirty percent. Rates will vary based on the country you're trying to call, but if you're often dialing internationally, this might be one tool worth checking out.
